History

When Candi Taylor was six years old, she and her twin sister Bambi were diagnosed with CLN1 Batten Disease, an incurable terminal genetic disorder. Her parents, Debbie Taylor and Carl Dunn, were a poor couple living in Jackson, Michigan, where the family was supported by Debbie's job as a cashier at a gas station. With little money and few options, there was little they could do as the girls' condition deteriorated. By the time the twins were eleven years old, they were both blind and bedridden. It was then that Debbie and Carl were approached by a man named Lynch, who offered them $100,000 if they would permit Candi and Bambi to participate in the trial of a new treatment for CLN1 Batten Disease.

A team of nameless men and women in white uniforms took Candi and Bambi away in an unmarked white van in the middle of the night, and Lynch gave their parents a plastic box containing $100,000 in cash. Eight months later, Candi was returned to her parents, healthy and apparently cured; Bambi, they were told, had not survived the treatment. Candi never forgave her parents for the death of her sister.

Candi's early teens were troubled. She was arrested several times for minor offenses like trespassing and being drunk in public, but she managed to avoid any truly serious confrontation with the law until she was 15. She was dating a man nearly twice her age, who taught her how to pick locks and bypass security systems -- a task made easier by the fact that his day job was installing those systems. It was fun helping him rob houses, until they were caught.

Candi was held for three days, during which she insisted that she had no idea what her boyfriend had been doing. She claimed that he told her he was picking something up from a friend's house. The police obviously did not believe her, but after three days, they released her without charges. To her surprise, he had told them the same story: that she was an innocent bystander, and nothing more. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, and she never saw him again.

By this time, she was going by her initials, "CT". She hates her given name and doesn't use it "because my parents are trailer park pieces of shit who gave me and my sister stripper names." She left home at 16, living on the street and becoming involved with the underground music scene in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

CT began traveling with musicians, first as a roadie and later as a member of a band. By the time she was 18, she was using the stage name "Pulse" and performing in Europe with a band called "Future Shock". She had become a well known DJ/Electronica composer/performer in the underground club scene. Interestingly, the childhood treatment that saved her life gave her a permanently raspy voice. She's not self-conscious about it, but it does annoy her when someone asks her to sing.

Pulse got her powers from an electrical accident on stage at an illegal rave when she was living in Reykjavík, Iceland. Several of her bandmates were seriously injured, but Pulse was unharmed. More than that: she could now generate, absorb, and control electricity. After this, she became something of a celebrity, getting endorsements from soft drink companies and sampler manufacturers. Two of her more interesting endorsements are from Wonderflex, the company that manufactures the extruded composite that she uses to create her "armored" boots and gloves, and Arc, a company that manufactures high-end electric motorcycles. As part of her deal with Arc, they gave her a lightweight racing motorcycle which can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.2 seconds -- without a battery! Pulse herself is the power source for the motorcycle.

Powers and Abilities

Pulse has the strength and stamina of a young woman who infrequently engages in exercise. Pulse can generate, absorb, and control electricity and electrical fields. She can fly short distances by manipulating electrical fields around her, and she can generate powerful electrical blasts. She can also interfere with radio communications, or even fry electronics with a snap of her fingers (something she has done more than once to reporters who annoyed her). In addition to her native American English, Pulse is fluent in Danish, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, and Icelandic.
