Aurora is a fit humanoid female with red skin, long green hair, and white eyes. She typically wears the blue and white uniform of a Cosmic Envoy, and the faint glow of her force field resembles a halo around her head. The blue gem on Aurora's chest indicates her current level of life energy: when the gem becomes dim, that means she has become dangerously weak. When Aurora is not present, Shawn Paul looks like a fit Mi'kmaw man in his mid 40s, with brown eyes, tan skin, and shoulder length brown hair. He typically wears casual clothing appropriate to the season.

Personality

Aurora is warm and caring, but she takes her responsibilities as a Cosmic Envoy very seriously. She can sometimes come across as "intense", but she is never deliberately unkind, even toward people who are fighting her. Shawn Paul is more willing to joke around than Aurora is, and he is more likely to become angry toward people who have disappointed him. Shawn is also more traditional in his values: Aurora's open approach to sexuality makes him profoundly uncomfortable.

Motivations

Community
The character believes that the greatest measure of an individual is in their value to society.
Enlightenment
The character's true calling is education and enlightenment, both their own and others'.

Complications

Obligation
Aurora's powers come from the Mwari, and the Mwari can take those powers away if she strays from the mission of the Cosmic Envoys.
Weakness
Shawn Paul does not have access to Auora's powers when she is not in control of their shared body.

History

In the center of the universe, in the upper atmosphere of a gas giant called Ishe, live the Mwari, an ancient species of immortal creatures resembling colossal jellyfish. For billions of years, the Mwari watched civilizations rise and fall in the universe around them. Some were destroyed by random misfortune, but most of them were destroyed by their own folly. Six billion years ago, the Mwari decided to do something about it.

The Mwari selected twenty thousand individuals from across the universe and transported them to the moons of Ishe. The Mwari taught these aliens the Mwari's philosophy, and infused them with a small portion of the Mwari's vast powers. These individuals became known as the Assembly of Cosmic Envoys.

Each Cosmic Envoy is assigned to a civilization on the brink of self-destruction. While the physical body of the Cosmic Envoy rests in a cocoon on one of the moons of Ishi, their mind is projected across the gulf of space, where it is bound to a compatible member of the endangered civilization. The host and the Cosmic Envoy share a single body, and take turns controlling that body. Whoever is currently in control of the body may freely communicate with the other mind, and may pass control of the body to their partner. When they do, the host's body and clothing physically transform to match the mind currently in control of the body.

The host for Aurora is a Mi'kmaw man named Shawn Paul. When he was contacted by Aurora, he was reluctant to agree. Shawn Paul was already very busy, acting as an emergency management specialist for the Eskasoni First Nation in Nova Scotia, while also volunteering as a youth counselor. However, after Aurora explained her mission, Shawn agreed to act as her host, realizing that he and Aurora would be able to help more people than Shawn could help alone.

After a period of adjustment, Shawn and Aurora have developed a mutually agreeable schedule for control of their shared body (barring emergencies or unexpected events). Shawn keeps his usual work schedule, and volunteers his time as a youth counselor several nights a week. While Shawn is in control, Aurora usually observes quietly, doing her best to respect Shawn's autonomy. However, she does sometimes ask him questions about things she does not understand about Earth's culture, and sometimes Shawn will initiate conversation with her.

On Shawn's days off of work, or while Shawn's mind is sleeping, Aurora travels the Earth. When she can, she assists in rescue operations and other humanitarian efforts. However, most of her time is spent in hospitals. She uses her powers to heal people, particularly young people with severe injuries or terminal illnesses. While she does this, she shares with them the philosophy of the Cosmic Envoys.

The philosophy of the Cosmic Envoys has six core tenets: strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures; strive to create a just world, regardless of laws and institutions that stand in the way; respect the bodily autonomy of others, and demand the same respect from them; strive to understand the universe in accordance with science and reason; be generous in giving pleasure, and gracious with those who share pleasure with you; accept that people are fallible, and that one should do one's best to make amends when one makes a mistake.

In practice, this means that Aurora promotes environmentalism, vegetarianism, atheism, polyamory, and the abolishment of prisons, among other things. This has made her a divisive figure. On the one hand, she is condemned by far-right pundits and politicians, and some religious fundamentalists call her a servant of "the Devil". On the other hand, she has attracted a core of followers who treat her teachings like a religion, which they call Auroranism. She has mixed feelings about the Auroranists. She disapproves of their attempts to revere her, but she appreciates that they are spreading the Cosmic Envoys' message. For his part, Shawn struggles to resolve Aurora's teachings and her promiscuity with his own religious beliefs, which are Roman Catholic and traditional Mi'kmaq.

Powers and Abilities

Shawn Paul has the strength and stamina of a fit man in his mid 40s who engages in regular exercise. He is skilled at emergency management planning, and he has the emotional intelligence to be an effective youth counselor. However, he has no special powers other than being able to mentally communicate with Aurora. When Aurora has control of their shared body, she is able to use her Cosmic Envoy abilities. She can erect a powerful force field around herself, she can fly, and she can heal others. She can control the substance of her body, becoming insubstantial or astronomically dense, or turning into electromagnetic radiation. Shawn Paul is fluent in American English, Québécois French, and the Mi'kmaq dialect of Algonquian; as a Cosmic Envoy, Aurora can communicate in any language she encounters. Aurora may also use her Telepathy to contact other Cosmic Envoys anywhere in the universe.
